The protagonist of Greek history since 718 BC, today the city of Crotone is the result of an urban stratification that has principally occurred from the 1930s onwards and has obfuscated its history. With this understanding, the project aims to return to the citizens of Crotone those spaces that were once vibrant centres of exchange and social interaction, now in a state of abandonment and decay.

Starting from its Greek origins, when theatre involved the whole community, the new parks aim to become venues for the needs and daily life of their users, bringing back to centre stage a history that was abandoned and almost forgotten.

The intervention is located in the municipality of Crotone, in a residential urban context in a median position between the historic centre of Crotone and the Pignera Park, an important green area on the outskirts of the city’s central area.

The project philosophy is to valorise the ancient Greek city, not only through its archaeological remains, but also through the narrative of its history. This is how the “narrative thread” was born, the project’s key element, consisting of a paving in carved and low-relief stone with the stories of ancient Kroton, which accompanies the visitor along all the pedestrian paths, squares and public spaces involved in the project.

The Ancient Kroton project is divided into three clusters, the third of which was designed by Dodi Moss. Cluster 3 covers an area of about 45,000 m2 and includes the construction of a new park near the ancient Masseria Suriano and the town’s market, as well as a new linear park on the site of the former Calabro Lucana railway, which was dismantled in 1972.

In order to create a slow circulation loop, the project includes the redevelopment of some routes that border the two parks; the road system has also been upgraded with the refurbishment of three roundabouts.

The elements that unite the entire project are: paving; urban furniture, made with durable, consistent and high-value materials; lighting and vegetation, through the introduction of native trees and shrubs.
