The redevelopment of Piazza SS Filippo e Giacomo is driven by the need to create an ordering element that gives a new visual and functional balance to the entire historic centre. The project introduces a large rectangular plane, placed parallel to the Town Hall, which becomes the spatial hub between the three main buildings: the Town Hall, the Museum and the Parish Church.

The regular rhythm of the buttresses of the neo-Gothic church is projected onto the ground, marking the paving of the square with bands of Predazzo pink granite, which reinforce the geometry of the public space. This pattern extends to the edge of the intervention area, creating a visual and material continuum between the different parts of the city.

The visual axis along Via Gabrielli is accentuated by new trees, becoming a visual promenade that connects the Town Hall, the Museum, the kindergarten and the public gardens. Here, the stone bands emphasise the new hierarchy of spaces, reinforcing the link between the square and the surrounding areas.

The project redesigns the urban void with a pure and iconic form, making the new museum façade and events area the natural culmination of the urban perspective. The building is no longer an isolated element, but becomes an integral part of the square, with a well-defined and recognisable entrance that invites visitors inside.

The museum extension takes on the role of a visual reference point, thanks to its strategic position and the large windows that look out onto the square. The multi-purpose room, inserted perpendicularly to the public space, reinforces this role, offering a versatile space for cultural events and community activities.

The existing amphitheatre has been incorporated into the museum extension, becoming a backdrop that visually closes the square and opens up new open spaces towards the Casa del Monech. The stage, slightly raised, becomes a reference point for outdoor public events, reinforcing the square’s cultural function.

The new visual axes, created by the entrance to the Town Hall, the square and Via Gabrielli, converge in a flush fountain, made from the same stone material as the paving. This element, in addition to improving urban comfort during the hottest months, becomes a focal point in the composition of the space.

Accessibility has been completely re-thought, removing physical and visual barriers to ensure a flexible and inclusive use of the area. The pathways are designed to blend harmoniously into the context, ensuring a smooth experience for everyone.

The redevelopment also extends to the green spaces around the church, creating a public garden that serves as a connection between the square and the surrounding areas. The new paving bands in granite basalt organise the space hierarchically, distinguishing between pedestrian areas and green spaces.

These elements are arranged with grassy surfaces, ground-covering shrubs and pathways paved in porphyry setts, with dedicated children’s play areas. This solution combines sustainability and liveability, improving the urban microclimate and enriching the experience of public space.
